Dear Parents/Carers,

Book Week

The children have enjoyed a visit from author Nick Arnold today as part of our celebration of Book Week. Nick’s Horrible Science books are a very popular read in school and the visit today has sparked further interest in his books, not to mention the enthusiasm his visit has generated for Science! We have purchased a box of Horrible Science books for each class and we hope that this will inspire the children to take up the challenge of reading all of the books in the series!

Thank you to those children who have volunteered to complete some book reviews for the Recommended Read display in school. Often the best way to decide on which book to read next is to ask for recommendations from others and we hope that this display will help to generate some interest in books and promote reading across the school. We are still looking for a few more book reviews to complete our board so if your child wishes to take part, they may still do so.

Don’t forget that Friday 3rd March is an opportunity for pupils to dress up as one of the characters from the books they are studying this year. This is one of the most popular events in the school year and the staff and I are really looking forward to seeing the children in their wonderful costumes. Remember that costumes do not have to be store bought, many can be made with items that you have at home. Please see previous emails from Mrs Marshall for some costume ideas.

Science Week

Science week will be held from 13th to the 17th of March. We have lots of exciting things planned including a visit from the Smoothie Bike this year! In preparation for this week, there is an invitation for pupils to take part in our school Science Fair by completing a Science project at home and then presenting this to their class during Science week. There will prizes for the best projects in each year group. Lastly there is an opportunity for parents/carers to come into school on Friday 17th March to complete a STEM investigation with your child in the classroom. Please see further details from Mr Hackett in a separate ParentMail.

Athletics Competition

Last week some of our pupils in Years 3 and 4 took part in an Athletics competition with other local schools. I am pleased to report that the children won many of the running events that they took part in and they also performed really well in the field events especially the javelin.

Overall we finished third out of ten teams. We are all very proud of the children’s achievements. Mr Leslie said that he was very impressed with the children’s determination, focus and enthusiasm.

A big thank you to parents for allowing children to take part in training sessions and for transporting children to the event itself. Your co-operation is much appreciated and ensures that our pupils have the opportunity to take part in events such as this.

Medical appointments

We would like to remind parents that appointments (eg GP, dentist) should, where possible, be arranged outside of school hours. Where it is unavoidable and appointments have to be made during school hours, the school should be notified in advance. The appointment card or a note is acceptable as evidence. Parents are requested to minimise the amount of teaching time that the child loses as a result of such appointments, by registering the child for the first lesson if the appointment is not until later in the morning / afternoon and ensuring that they return to school as soon as possible following the appointment.

Contact Information

Please ensure that you inform the school office as soon as possible if you change your mobile number or e-mail address. It is very important that we are able to communicate information to you, especially in case of emergency.

With all good wishes,
